English for Technical Communication in European Engineering Companies

About the project

The partnership of the project entitled English for technical communication in European engineering companies consisted of the sending organisation (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Brno University of Technology) and the hosting organization Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie du Jura in France. The objective set for the partnership as a whole was a transfer of experience with methodology of teaching technical English for engineering professionals, including course curriculum design, teaching materials, and evaluation tools, between the teachers from the language centres of the hosting institution and the teachers (Engineering English) from the Institute of languages of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Brno. The objective of this organisation was to support - through the above project - the continuous education of language trainers in the management of engineering English courses so that these trainers would be able to prepare the FME students for performance of their working tasks in EU companies where English is a basic means of professional communication between technicians. The exchange beneficiaries were language trainers from the Institute of languages FME BUT who acquired (through the above project) the new experience in methodology of teaching technical English for engineering professionals through observations in selected courses of partner institution and consequently through discussions with both course leaders and also with course participants from regional enterprises, assessed the possibilities for the use of these approaches in the preparation of new courses for teaching technical English at FME BUT. The project addressed the regional/sectoral need (engineering) to improve the quality in the preparation of language specialists who teach professional engineering English at FME BUT. At present, teaching of professional engineering English is not at the level that would equip the graduates from FSI BUT with sufficient language competences enabling them an effective performance of their working tasks in EU engineering companies in the manner that would correspond to their professional knowledge acquired at FME BUT. One of the ways of how to improve the current state was the exchange of experience with the educational institution that is directly linked with industrial sphere and meets the immediate requirements of industrial partners in the area of language education. The two partner institutions closely cooperated to prepare the project; the exchange of the two language trainers from the Institute of languages at FME BUT was realised in the languages centres of Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie du Jura in France. The project duration was 9 months; January 2007 - September 2007. The exchange itself took 12 days (June 2007).
