English for Practical Training of Engineering Students II

Programme of exchange

The exchange of three participants from FME BUT took place at Norwegian Universities and University Colleges within the period of 17 May - 30 May 2006 with the following programme:

1st day:

arrival of participants in Oslo (late in the evening), accommodation in Oslo

2nd day:

transfer to Sarpsborg, accommodation, introductory visit to the Faculty of Engineering of OUC (Sarpsborg); dealings with a project coordinator, fine - tuning of the programme

3rd day:

attendance at lectures/seminars in English, where the participants explored the project Shell marathon competition and discussed the project results both with the students and the Norwegian colleagues with the aim to acquire and exchange the methods used in the host institution in respect of teaching presentations (both oral and written) in English; a joint workshop with Norwegian colleagues (Hong Wu, project coordinator, Steinar Hurrod, vice - dean) and their Chinese guests (prof. Liu Dezhi, Faculty of Economics and Trade, Shijiazhuang University of Economics and prof. Zheng Bingzhang, teamleader for students Venture Cup)

4th day:

visit to the engineering company (Hydro-lift) in Fredrikstad organized by the hosting institution, discussions with the professionals from this industrial plant about the level of professional English required for engineering students participating in EU mobilities. The acquired findings should be implemented into the study programs at FME BUT.

5th day:

introductory visit to the Faculty of Computer Sciences in Halden, cultural and industrial background of Halden and Fredrikstadt as towns hosting Ostfold College faculties.

6th day:

participants made themselves familiar with study programs for bachelor and master study and the courses run in English (R.Roppestad, course leader, Jan Holberg, dean), presentation of students project entitled Eyebot programming with practical demonstrations of activities and a follow - up discussion with both the students participating in the project and leading teachers.

7th day:

presentation of FME BUT mainly with respect to study programs planned in English, cooperation between FME BUT and local industry where English is one of the languages of professional communication, information about the results of language trainers exchange within the LdV project entitled English for Practical Training of Engineering Students in EU companies that was realized in cooperation with the Maltese University, Faculty of Engineering in 2005, summarizing the outputs of exchange, evaluation, dealings about future cooperation in the development of professional engineering English within transnational programmes offered by EU with special emphasis on the program Financial mechanisms EHP/Norska.

8th day:

transfer to Trondheim.

9th day:

introductory visit to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, participants made themselves familiar with study programs for bachelor and master study and the courses run in English (Kare Olaussen, Department of Physics). Presentation of FME BUT mainly with respect to study programs planned in English, cooperation between FME BUT and local industry where English is one of the languages of professional communication, information about the results of language trainers exchange within the LdV project entitled English for practical training of engineering students in EU companies that was realized in cooperation with the Maltese University, Faculty of Engineering in 2005

10th day:

participants made themselves familiar with the student final project (Parity Violation from Brain Physics); discussions with the professionals from this industrial plant about the level of professional English required for engineering students participating in EU mobilities. The acquired findings should be implemented into the study programs at FME BUT, summarizing the outputs of exchange, evaluation, dealings about future cooperation in the development of professional engineering English within transnational programmes offered by EU with special emphasis on the program Financial mechanisms EHP/Norska.

11th day:

visit to Hessdalen, where practical observations took place within the project Hessdalen (Ostfold University College, Faculty of Engineering). Visit to Roros, an historical place with technical open - air museum, a former copper mine.

12th day:

transfer to Molde, visit to Molde

13th day:

visit to Molde University College that cooperates with FME BUT within the SOCRATES programme. The participants were mainly interested in the activities of the Department of Informatics (prof. Arne Lokketangen) and the course Heuristic optimization methods run in English. Transfer to Oslo (night train).

14th day:

visit to Oslo, departure of participants
