English for Practical Training of Engineering Students

Partnership

Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
provides courses for students of bachelor, master and doctoral programmes in mechanical engineering subjects.
Subject area institutes of FME BUT
have already developed or are currently developing study programmes in English that will be submitted for accreditation and that will widen the choice of engineering jobs for graduates in European companies. Teaching of engineering subjects in English is ensured in close cooperation between the subject area institutes and the department of languages at FME BUT. This department assists the faculty institutes in training the engineering teachers who teach their subjects in English.
Department of languages FME BUT
runs courses for students of all study programmes with special emphasis on engineering English. A part of specialized language courses offered by the department are also preparatory courses for students who applied for mobilities or practical training in EU companies. The department also runs in - house courses of engineering English for the university staff. The teachers of the department of languages have had a long - time experience with teaching of engineering English and also with coordination of transnational EU projects focused on the development of teaching materials for engineering English (A Practical Guide for Technical/Scientific Writers in English, Leonardo I, pilot project 1998 - 2001 and Writing Professional English, Leonardo da Vinci II, language competences project, 2002 - 2005). Supported by the faculty authorities, the department has installed a multimedia laboratory with 15 working stations where new teaching methods and materials are verified.

Faculty of Engineering, University of Malta
provides university education in the following subject areas: Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, Electrical Power and Control Engineering, Microelectronics, and Communications and Computer Engineering. The curricula of subject area programmes are similar to the study programmes offered by FME BUT (CAED, mechatronics, industrial robots, manufacturing systems, quality control, etc.).

An important task of the Faculty of Engineering is to cooperate with Maltese industry. The Faculty members are active in research as well as in engineering consulting and some hold key positions in several industries and institutions around the country. The department of industrial services has a team of highly qualified specialists trained abroad who offer professional training to industrial subjects in the area of manufacturing processes and systems and also in manufacturing control. Industrial companies, on the other hand, provide the students with access to solutions related to particular case studies.

The Faculty of Engineering participates in a variety of international research programmes and projects, in collaboration with other academic institutions: (Cranfield University, UK; Instituto di Ricerca e Tecnologia delle Materie Plastiche,Itálie;Technical University of Demnark, etc.).These projects often solve the tasks given by the industry with active involvement of students within the mobility programmes. Currently, on the basis of bilateral agreement between BUT and the University of Malta, students' mobilities and staff study visits are going on within the EU programmes (Socrates, Erasmus).
