Jednoslabičná a dvouslabičná přídavná jména

2. stupeň: …-er, 3. stupeň: the …-est

             small – smaller – the smallest

             quick – quicker – the quickest

             tall – taller – the tallest

             cheap – cheaper – the cheapest

 

U stupňování dochází k následujícím pravopisným změnám:

◦ koncové nevyslovované –e se vypouští (resp. je už v příponách –er, -est)

nice – nicer – the nicest

large – larger – the largest

◦ koncové -y se měkčí na –i, jestliže předchází souhláska

easy – easier – the easiest

happy – happier – the happiest

pretty – prettier – the prettiest

◦ dochází ke zdvojení koncové souhlásky u krátkých přídavných jmen s jednou samohláskou a jednou souhláskou (v učebnicích a slovnících obvykle vyznačeno u prvního stupně)

big – bigger – the biggest

hot – hotter – the hottest

fat – fatter – the fattest

2. stupeň: more …, 3. stupeň: the most …

interesting – more interesting – the most interesting

attractive – more attractive – the most attractive

expensive – more expensive – the most expensive

popular – more popular – the most popular

 

Věty srovnávací

· srovnání u 2. stupně: pomocí than

Brno is smaller than Prague.

Football is more popular than tennis.

lze použít much pro zdůraznění míry: She’s much nicer than her sister.

· stejná míra: as … as

James is as tall as my brother.

I’m as worried as you are.

· odlišná míra: not as/so … as

She isn’t as slim as her mother.

My car wasn’t so expensive as yours.

· srovnání u 3. stupně – nej ze všech

Which is the tallest building in the world?

He’s the most inteligent student in the class.

 

Některá přídavná jména tvoří 2. a 3. stupeň nepravidelně!
